You've picked a very interesting topic. I've often wondered about these things myself. How lj-users become my friends? Well, I, for one, can account for each and every one of my friends, as I have only seven of them. Two of these friends are authors, and I friended them to receive updates on their stories, and they kindly friended me back. The other ones are the people I encountered while browsing the Lj-communities, and somehow we ended up - more or less - friends. One of these friends is a person who I chat daily with - we exchange views, opinions, small talk about inconsequential things ans such. The other one is someone who is like a breath of fresh air - we don't chat often, but it's very nice to hear from her. And then there are, of course, three more people whose journals I read (but who haven't friended me back - not that I've asked them). All in all, I'm very content with my current friends-list. I'd never add people I don't care about in one way or another, that's just pointless.
Thank you for the interesting post, it made me stop and take stock of my present situation and think more about my friends, and I really appreciate it.
